The deck is the answer. On a standard equipment trailer, the deck rides on top of the frame. On a lowboy it drops down between the wheels. The load ends up closer to the pavement, and that buys you two things.

First, a shallow ramp angle. A 19-foot electric scissor lift weighs about 3,200 lbs. It rolls on small solid tires with almost no ground clearance. On a steep ramp it high-centers before it runs out of drive power. The low deck takes the angle out of the climb, so the machine walks right on.

Second, travel height. A tall machine rides lower down the road. That's what gets you back under the shop door at the end of the day.

A deckover goes the other way, with the deck up over the wheels and full width edge to edge. A standard equipment trailer sits between the two. Tell us the machine and we'll let it pick the trailer.

Most units sit in the 14,000-lb class.

GVWR is the trailer's total rating: trailer plus load. Your payload is that rating minus the trailer's own weight, which is stamped on the VIN sticker on the tongue. Figure the trailer takes roughly 4,000 lbs of it.

Here's where the common machines land. A mid-size skid steer like the Bobcat S66 runs about 7,150 lbs. It rides a 14,000-lb lowboy with room left for a bucket and a pallet of attachments. A 4-ton mini excavator like the Kubota KX040-4 is close to 9,500 lbs. That's the edge of a 14,000-lb trailer, so we'll walk you up one rating and you never think about it again. A compact telehandler such as the JCB 505-20 is about 12,100 lbs, and it belongs on the heaviest-rated lowboys we carry.

Bigger than that is past this class. That's what our heavy gooseneck trailers are for. Read us your machine's operating weight and we'll do the subtraction with you.

Measure across the outside of your tires. That number, not the spec-sheet width, is what the deck has to swallow.

Leave the bucket out of it. Skid steer buckets often run wider than the machine's stance. They ride high, so the tires are what decide the deck.
