Dense loads run heavy fast: a 7x14 in the 14,000-lb class moves about three yards of wet dirt or gravel a trip — a driveway's worth of base in two runs. A longer bed doesn't raise the rating, either. A 16-foot bed will hold more dirt than its axles are rated to carry, so on dense material the rule is level, never heaped. Light, bulky loads flip the logic — mulch and brush fill the bed long before they load the axles, so buy the length and the taller sides there.
