Position Overview
The Lead Service Technician is the senior technical role in the service department. This position combines expert-level mechanical skill with daily workflow leadership, customer communication, and close coordination with the parts team. The goal of this role is to keep the shop productive, safe, organized, and moving — while delivering a clear and confident experience for customers.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Interaction & Service Coordination
- Greet and check in customers for service appointments.
- Walk trailers with customers to understand concerns and identify safety issues.
- Build or review repair estimates and obtain approval before work begins.
- Provide repair status updates throughout the job.
- Assist customers during pickup — explain repairs, safety notes, and recommended
maintenance.
- Maintain a professional, straightforward approach in all customer interactions.
Technical & Diagnostic Expertise
- Diagnose electrical, brake, axle, hydraulic, and structural issues accurately.
- Perform complex repairs and specialty installations with high-quality workmanship.
- Serve as the primary technical resource when other technicians need support.
- Document repair notes clearly for accurate invoicing and future reference
Workflow & Shop Throughput
- Prioritize jobs based on schedule, customer needs, and available parts.
- Keep bays full and maintain a steady, predictable workflow throughout the day.
- Assign tasks or assist other technicians based on skill level and job complexity.
- Communicate delays, revised findings, or additional work needs promptly.
Coordination With Parts Department
- Communicate parts needs early and accurately to reduce downtime.
- Verify special-order parts and ensure correct components are staged before repairs
begin.
- Identify common-use parts that should be stocked to improve turnaround times.
- Provide technical insight when alternates or substitutions are needed.
- Maintain consistent, professional teamwork across service and parts.
Parts Department Responsibilities

- Support onboarding of new technicians.
- Demonstrate proper diagnostic and repair techniques.

Quality, Safety & Shop Standards
- Conduct final checks on major repairs such as brakes, wiring, axles, and structural
work.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment.
- Ensure tools and equipment are used correctly and report issues immediately.
- Reduce comebacks by emphasizing precision and clear documentation.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in trailer, automotive, equipment, diesel, or related
mechanical repair.
- Strong diagnostic abilities in electrical, brake, and axle systems.
- Effective communication skills with customers and team members.
- Ability to coach and support other technicians.
- High attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality
Compensation
- Hourly pay based on experience.
- Monthly performance bonus tied to service revenue and operational results
