Before you order brakes

A few things to check so the part fits the first time, or just tell us what you’ve got and the parts team will spec it with you.

Match the brake size
Electric brakes are sized by diameter and width (e.g. 10″×2-1/4″, 12″×2″). Match your axle’s rating.
Electric, hydraulic, or disc
The actuator and controller differ completely between them. Tell us which system your trailer runs.
Brakes are handed
Assemblies are left/right specific. Order in pairs or specify the side.
Controller by axle count
A brake controller lives in the tow vehicle; give us your axle count so we match the amperage.

Brakes & Accessories FAQ

What's the difference between electric and hydraulic surge brakes?
Electric brakes are applied by a controller in the tow vehicle, which sends power to magnets in each brake assembly — you can adjust how hard they grab and apply them manually. Surge (hydraulic) brakes are self-contained: a master cylinder in the coupler senses the trailer pushing against the truck when you slow down and applies the brakes proportionally, with no in-cab controller needed. Replacement parts are completely different between the two systems.
What size brake assemblies does my trailer need?
Brake size follows axle capacity: 10" x 2 1/4" assemblies are standard on 3,500 lb axles, and 12" x 2" on 5,200–7,000 lb axles. Measure the inside diameter of your drum, note the axle rating, and check whether the assembly is left- or right-hand — they're side-specific.
Do I need a brake controller in my truck?
For electric trailer brakes, yes — without a controller the brakes never engage. Surge brakes need no controller. Most states require working trailer brakes above a certain trailer weight and a breakaway system on braked trailers, so check the requirements where you tow.
