Before you order hitches & towing

A few things to check so the part fits the first time, or just tell us what you’ve got and the parts team will spec it with you.

Match the ball size
Your coupler is stamped 2″, 2-5/16″, or 3″. The ball has to match it exactly.
Stay above the rating
Every hitch, ball, and mount carries a max tow and tongue-weight rating. Give us your loaded trailer weight so we stay above it.
Measure receiver & drop
For a ball mount, note the receiver size (1-1/4″ or 2″) and the rise/drop needed to sit the trailer level.
Gooseneck vs Bumper Pull
Gooseneck and pintle setups use entirely different couplers. Tell us which your trailer is built for.

Hitches & Towing FAQ

What size coupler or ball do I need?
The coupler size is stamped on top of the coupler — 2" and 2 5/16" are the common trailer sizes, with 1 7/8" on light-duty trailers. The ball must be exactly the same size, and both the coupler and ball ratings must meet or exceed the trailer's GVWR. Never tow with a mismatched ball; a 2" ball in a 2 5/16" coupler can separate under load.
What's the difference between a gooseneck and a bumper pull hitch?
A bumper pull couples to a ball behind the truck; a gooseneck couples to a ball mounted in the truck bed over the rear axle. Putting the weight over the axle lets a gooseneck tow substantially more and tightens the turning radius, but it requires an in-bed hitch and a gooseneck-style trailer. Neither is "better" — it depends on the trailer you tow.
Can you install a hitch or coupler for me?
Most of our stores have an on-site service department that can install couplers, ball mounts, and gooseneck hitches. Call your nearest location to check availability and schedule the work.
