How to Secure Cargo on a Flatbed Trailer
A practical flatbed cargo-securement checklist covering rated tiedowns, anchor points, blocking, edge protection and load checks.
A flatbed load needs more than enough straps to look secure. The cargo, tiedowns, anchor points, blocking and trailer ratings must work as one system that prevents the load from moving forward, rearward, sideways or vertically during normal travel.
This is a preparation checklist, not a substitute for the rules that apply to your vehicle, commodity and route. Interstate commercial motor vehicles are subject to federal cargo-securement requirements, including commodity-specific rules. Private and intrastate hauling may be governed differently. Check the requirements for the trip before loading.
1. Verify the Trailer and Load Ratings
Know the trailer GVWR, axle and tire ratings, deck dimensions and rated anchor points. Then determine the real cargo weight and center of gravity. Do not assume a load fits because it occupies the deck or because the tow vehicle can pull it. The loaded trailer and every component still need to remain within their ratings.
2. Inspect Every Securement Component
- Use tiedowns and connectors intended for cargo securement, with legible ratings where the applicable rule or your operating policy requires them.
- Remove chain, webbing, binders, hooks or fittings with cuts, cracks, deformation, severe wear or other damage that weakens them.
- Inspect trailer anchor points and structure. A strong chain does not improve a damaged or unsuitable attachment point.
- Confirm hooks and connectors are seated so they cannot open or release during travel.
3. Control Rolling and Sliding Before Tensioning
Cargo likely to roll needs chocks, wedges, a cradle or another suitable restraint. Blocking and bracing can reduce movement, but loose material or an unrated deck feature is not automatically securement. Place the load deliberately, keep it stable during loading, and use the trailer and equipment manufacturers’ instructions.
4. Choose Tiedowns by Working Load Limit
Working load limit is not the same as breaking strength. Build the system from rated components and use the lowest-rated component in each path. Under the federal commercial rules, aggregate working load limit and the minimum number of tiedowns are separate tests; meeting one does not excuse the other.
FMCSA’s general rule for covered commercial loads requires the aggregate working load limit to be at least one-half the weight of the article or group being restrained. The rule also changes how a tiedown contributes depending on whether it connects to the cargo or passes over it, and it has separate minimum tiedown counts based on length, weight and blocking. Commodity-specific rules take priority when they apply.
5. Protect Tiedowns at Edges
A sharp or abrasive edge can damage webbing under tension. Use edge protection that resists abrasion, cutting and crushing anywhere a tiedown is exposed to that risk. Position chains and straps so they do not rub against tires, brakes, wiring or hot components.
6. Secure Attachments and Loose Material
Buckets, ramps, spare attachments and small tools are cargo too. Secure them independently or in a container designed to hold them. NHTSA recommends tying large objects directly to the vehicle or trailer and considering a sturdy tarp or net over a load; a cover contains light material but does not replace the restraints required for the underlying cargo.
7. Perform a Walkaround and Recheck
- Confirm the coupler or gooseneck connection, safety equipment, jack, ramps and gates are secured for travel.
- Check tires, wheels, brakes, breakaway equipment and lights according to the trailer manufacturer’s instructions.
- Look at the load from every side for a path it could move or a tiedown it could cut.
- After beginning the trip, stop in a safe place and recheck the load at the interval required by the applicable rules and whenever conditions suggest movement.
Commodity-Specific Loads Need Their Own Plan
Vehicles, heavy equipment, machinery, logs, metal coils and several other commodities have detailed federal requirements for covered commercial operations. Do not turn a generic strap count into a universal answer. Identify the cargo classification first, then follow the applicable regulation and the equipment manufacturers’ instructions.

Write down the securement plan for repeat loads and train every driver to use the same inspection points. A consistent plan makes damaged gear, a changed attachment or an incomplete walkaround easier to catch before departure.
