Gooseneck Trailer Storage Options: Toolboxes & Racks

Where gear lives on a gooseneck: neck and riser toolboxes, side-mount boxes, deck-on-the-neck platforms, chain racks and dunnage racks — and how to choose.

A gooseneck can store gear in several places. Common choices include a neck toolbox, a box between the risers, an under-deck box, or an open deck above the neck. Some trailers may also offer chain or material racks. Choose storage by what you carry, what needs to lock, and how much weight the options add.

The storage map on a gooseneck

The neck and risers create storage space ahead of the main deck. A box can use that area without taking room from the load. The available space includes the coupler area, the riser faces, and the frame below the deck. Choose the hitch style first, then plan storage around the exact trailer.

Neck toolbox: the standard starting point

Riser toolbox: deck-side access, and a winch garage

The riser toolbox mounts between the gooseneck risers and opens toward the deck. It keeps gear close to the work area without taking up the main deck. Some setups can also enclose a winch. Side-mount toolboxes: under-deck capacity and pump housings

Side-mount boxes hang below the deck along a frame rail. This keeps the main deck clear. On some hydraulic trailers, a side box holds the pump and battery instead of loose tools. Size and use vary, so check the exact box on the trailer you are considering.

Deck on the neck

A deck over the neck turns open frame space into another storage surface. It can hold light, bulky gear while leaving the main deck open. The platform also adds weight ahead of the trailer axles and must leave room for the truck cab during turns. Treat it as a factory-order question and confirm its current size, weight, and availability before adding it.

Chain racks and dunnage racks

Chain racks keep chains and binders away from cleaner gear. Under-deck racks can hold wood blocks or other long items. These options do not appear often in current stock, so do not expect them on every lot. Ask whether the manufacturer still offers them or whether a current toolbox or rack can do the same job.

Where the spare tire rides

Three buying angles

Locking storage. Decide which tools need a lock and which only need a place to ride. Confirm the lock and latch on each box. Open decks and racks do not provide the same protection as a closed toolbox.

Added weight. Most of these options sit ahead of the trailer axles. Their weight reduces payload and changes how weight is shared with the truck. Ask the sales team to review the finished trailer's ratings and empty weight before ordering several storage options together.

What rides where. A working default: chains and binders in a chain rack or neck box, where grease and grime don't matter; straps in the riser or neck box, out of the sun that degrades webbing; pump and battery in the hydraulic side-mount; dunnage under the deck; tarps and light bulky gear on the neck deck.

Choose these options when…

  • Neck toolbox: start here when you need basic lockable storage near the hitch.
  • Riser toolbox: you work from the deck and want straps at hand, or you're adding a winch and want it enclosed.
  • Side-mount boxes: you carry more gear than the neck holds, or the trailer runs hydraulics.
  • Deck on the neck: you need open storage above the neck and the added weight works for the build.
  • Chain rack / dunnage rack: you move equipment or pipe weekly and are ordering, not buying off the lot.
