Trailer Ramp Types: A Buyer's Guide
Ramp gates, fold-up and stand-up ramps, slide-ins, flip-over dovetail ramps, and hydraulic tails — how each trailer ramp type loads and what it trades away.
Trailer loading systems fall into a few main groups. A utility trailer may use a full-width ramp gate. An equipment trailer may use fold-up, stand-up, or slide-in ramps. A deckover may pair heavy flip-over ramps with a dovetail. Other trailers use a powered tail or a deck that tilts to the ground. Compare your machine's ground clearance, the setup work at each stop, and how much flat deck you need.
How to compare ramp options
Compare four things. Loading angle: a longer ramp or tail creates a gentler climb. Setup: attached ramps take less placement work than loose ramps. Flat deck: a dovetail or stored ramp may use space at the rear. Weight: a heavy gate or tail adds to the trailer's empty weight. Bring your machine's width and lowest ground-clearance measurement when you shop.
Ramp gates on utility trailers
Utility trailers typically load through a full-width mesh ramp gate hinged at the rear — commonly a 3-foot gate on narrower singles and a 4-foot gate where mowers and UTVs need a gentler climb. A fold-in variant folds forward onto the deck instead of standing upright, cutting wind drag when you run empty. Heavier-duty gates use thicker frames and expanded-metal mesh, and a transition lip at the hinge smooths the bump where gate meets deck for low mowers. If a gate covers your loading, a utility trailer is the simplest option going: nothing to carry, nothing to store, one latch to work.
Fold-up, stand-up, and slide-in ramps on equipment trailers
Bumper-pull equipment trailers carry their ramps with them, and the carrying style is the real decision:
- Fold-up ramps (commonly 5-foot) hinge at the rear of the deck and fold flat onto it. Always attached and always aligned — you never carry them — but they occupy the last stretch of deck when stowed.
- Stand-up ramps stow vertically at the rear corners and swing down to load. Spring-assisted versions take most of the lift out of raising them. ARC's Bigfoot configuration pairs a 4-foot dovetail with spring-assisted stand-up ramps, so the ramps only span from tail to ground.
- Slide-in ramps store in holders under the rear of the deck. They keep the deck completely clear, but they're the most manual option — pull, place, align, and re-stow every cycle — and loose ramps can walk off a jobsite.
Flip-over ramps and dovetails on deckovers
Deckover trailers sit higher than trailers with the deck between the wheels. Many use a dovetail plus heavy fold-over ramps to make the climb easier. PJ has used names such as “Monster Ramps” and “Mega Ramps” for this general style. Names and sizes can change, so focus on how the ramps work and confirm the current option on the trailer you are considering. These ramps are usually part of the trailer's original build, not a simple bolt-on upgrade.
Dovetails: the fixed-angle helpers
A dovetail is a sloped tail that shortens the distance your ramps must span. Tail length varies by trailer. Short tails are common on bumper-pull equipment trailers. Longer tails appear on many goosenecks. Some use an open-slat surface to shed mud. Hydraulic dovetails, briefly
A hydraulic dovetail replaces loose ramps with a powered tail. The tail lowers to the ground, becomes the loading surface, and then returns to its travel position. It can reduce setup work, but it also adds weight and more parts to maintain. Confirm the tail's dimensions, rating, and operation on the exact trailer before ordering.
Dump trailer ramps
Dump trailers use slide-in ramps that ride in carriers under the rear of the bed, below the spreader or barn-door gate, so skid steers and compact tractors can climb into the bed. They work like equipment-trailer slide-ins — manual but out of the way — and rear support stands steady the trailer while machines climb aboard.
The no-ramp alternative: tilt decks
