Aluminum Trailer

An aluminum trailer uses aluminum for much of its frame, body, or both. Aluminum is lighter than a comparable steel build and naturally resists corrosion, but capacity and durability depend on the complete design, not the material alone. Buyers should compare the certification label, payload rating, construction, and intended use rather than assuming every aluminum trailer is lighter or stronger.

Axle (Single, Tandem, Triple)

Also called: single axle, tandem axle, triple axle

An axle supports the trailer through its wheels and transfers load to the suspension. A single-axle trailer has one axle; tandem and triple configurations have two or three. More axles can increase rated capacity and stability, but the trailer is still limited by its GVWR, GAWR, tires, wheels, frame, coupler, and other rated components.

Axle Rating

Axle rating is the maximum load assigned to an axle system by its manufacturer. Common trailer axle ratings include 3,500, 5,200, 6,000, and 7,000 pounds, with higher-rated axles used on some heavy goosenecks. Adding axle ratings does not calculate payload by itself: compare the trailer’s GAWR, GVWR, empty weight, tires, wheels, suspension, brakes, and tongue load.

Barn Doors

Barn doors are a pair of rear doors on an enclosed trailer that swing to the sides. They can work well at loading docks or in places where a full ramp door cannot be lowered, but wheeled cargo may require a separate ramp. Compare door opening, hinges, holdbacks, interior clearance, and how you plan to load rather than assuming one rear-door style is best.

Brake Controller

Also called: electric brake controller, trailer brake controller

A brake controller is an in-cab device that tells a trailer’s electric brakes how strongly to apply when the tow vehicle slows. Proportional controllers respond to braking force; time-delay controllers ramp up from a preset level. The controller, tow vehicle, connector, and trailer brakes must be compatible and adjusted for the actual load. Brake-equipment requirements vary by jurisdiction and trailer rating.

Breakaway Kit

A breakaway kit uses a switch, cable, and onboard battery to apply a trailer’s electric brakes if the trailer separates from the tow vehicle. It is an emergency backup, not a substitute for the hitch, safety chains, routine brake service, or a charged battery. Requirements vary by trailer rating and jurisdiction, so follow the certification label, manufacturer instructions, and applicable law.

Bumper Pull (Tag-Along) Trailer

Also called: tag-along trailer, bumper hitch trailer

A bumper pull, also called a tag-along trailer, couples to a receiver-mounted ball hitch at the rear of the tow vehicle, not to an ordinary bumper. It avoids the in-bed hitch hardware used by a gooseneck and is common across utility, cargo, car-hauler, equipment, and dump trailers. Capacity and stability depend on the specific trailer, hitch, tow vehicle, loading, and weight-distribution setup.

Car Hauler

A car hauler is an open or enclosed trailer configured to transport vehicles. Useful features include a low loading angle, ramps or a tilt deck, rated vehicle-securement points, removable fenders, and enough deck length and payload for the vehicle. Measure track width, ground clearance, wheelbase, actual vehicle weight, and door clearance before selecting a trailer.

Channel Frame

A channel frame is a trailer chassis built from C-shaped steel channel, the open side of the "C" faces inward. Channel is the standard frame material on utility, landscape, and lighter equipment trailers: strong for its weight, easy to repair, and less expensive than tube. Heavier trailers step up to I-beam main rails; enclosed trailers often use tube frame construction.

Concession Trailer

A concession trailer is an enclosed trailer built or prepared for food service, retail vending, or mobile business use. Typical options include serving windows, electrical service, water systems, counters, ventilation, and equipment mounting. Health, fire, electrical, plumbing, and permitting requirements vary by business and jurisdiction, so confirm the approved layout before ordering or completing the build-out.

Coupler

The coupler is the latching mechanism at the front of a trailer that clamps onto the tow vehicle's hitch ball. Couplers are sized to a specific ball diameter, 2", 2-5/16", and 3" are common, and stamped with their own weight rating, which must meet or exceed the trailer's GVWR. The three main styles are the straight/A-frame ball coupler ( bumper pull ), the vertical-tube gooseneck coupler, and the pintle lunette ring.

Curb Weight (Empty Weight / Dry Weight)

Also called: empty weight, dry weight

Curb weight is what the trailer weighs empty but equipped for normal use. It may also be called empty weight or dry weight, although manufacturers do not always include the same options, battery, spare tire, or fluids. Use a scale when the exact as-equipped weight matters; subtract that weight from GVWR for a starting payload estimate, then respect every component and tow-vehicle limit.

D

D-Rings

D-rings are steel tie-down anchors welded or bolted to a trailer’s deck, floor, or frame. Their working-load limit, mounting method, direction of pull, and supporting structure determine how they may be used. Select straps, chains, binders, and anchor points as a complete rated securement system, and follow the cargo-specific securement requirements that apply to the load.

Deckover Trailer

A deckover trailer has its deck mounted on top of the wheels rather than between them, giving you the full frame width, typically 96–102" of unobstructed deck with no wheel wells or fenders in the way. That extra width is ideal for pallets, hay, and wide equipment. The trade-off is a deck height roughly 8–10" taller than a comparable low-profile trailer, which means a steeper load angle and higher center of gravity.

Dovetail

A dovetail is a downward-sloped section, usually the last 2 to 5 feet, at the rear of an equipment or car trailer's deck. By starting the ramp angle before the ramps themselves, a dovetail dramatically reduces the approach angle, so low-clearance cars and long-frame equipment load without scraping. Self-cleaning dovetails are slotted or open so mud falls through instead of caking on.

Drop-Leg Jack

A drop-leg jack is a trailer jack whose inner leg free-falls and pins in place, letting you take up most of the height instantly and crank only the last few inches. On heavy trailers this turns minutes of cranking into seconds. Spec sheets list jack capacity (2,000 lb up to dual 12,000 lb jacks on big goosenecks), it must handle the trailer's loaded tongue weight , not the whole trailer.

Dump Trailer

A dump trailer has a hydraulically raised bed that tilts to unload loose or bulk material. Buyers commonly compare GVWR and payload, bed dimensions, side height, rear-gate style, dump angle, hydraulic-hoist design, battery and charging setup, and the tow vehicle required for the loaded trailer. Load placement and material behavior matter because a hoist rating does not make every load safe to dump.

E-Track

E-track is a slotted steel rail system mounted to a trailer's walls or floor that accepts snap-in tie-down fittings anywhere along its length. Unlike fixed D-rings , E-track lets you move anchor points to match each load, which is why it's the standard securement system inside enclosed cargo trailers. Horizontal wall-mounted E-track also doubles as a shelf and load-bar mount.

Electric Brakes

Electric trailer brakes use an electromagnet inside each brake assembly and an in-cab brake controller to apply braking force. They are common on tandem-axle cargo, equipment, dump, and car-hauler trailers because braking can be adjusted for load. Brake requirements and thresholds vary by jurisdiction, so verify the trailer, tow vehicle, controller, breakaway system, and applicable rules.

Equipment Trailer

An equipment trailer is a heavy-duty open trailer built for hauling machinery, skid steers, mini excavators, tractors, scissor lifts, typically 14,000 lb GVWR and up with reinforced decks, heavy ramps, and rub rails with stake pockets for chaining down loads. The line between a "utility" and "equipment" trailer is capacity: once you're on 7,000 lb axles with a dovetail or heavy ramps, it's an equipment trailer.

Fender

Trailer fenders cover the wheels on trailers whose deck sits between the tires, utility trailers, car haulers, and low-profile equipment trailers. Removable fenders unbolt so wide equipment like a tractor with dual wheels can straddle the deck edge; heavy-duty diamond-plate fenders double as a step. Deckover trailers have no fenders at all because the deck rides above the tires.

Fifth Wheel vs Gooseneck

Both couple inside a pickup bed over the rear axle, but they use different hardware: a fifth-wheel connection uses a horseshoe-shaped hitch plate and kingpin (the RV standard, prized for a cushioned ride), while a gooseneck uses a simple ball in the truck bed (the commercial and equipment standard, prized for a smaller bed footprint and higher weight ratings). Nearly all work trailers, dump, equipment, flatbed, livestock, are gooseneck, not fifth wheel.

Flatbed Trailer

A flatbed trailer has an open deck without fixed full-height sides or a roof, allowing cargo to be loaded from the rear, sides, or above. Flatbeds range from compact bumper-pull equipment trailers to long gooseneck freight trailers. Compare deck height and width, frame construction, axle placement, payload, ramps, securement points, and the dimensions of the intended load.

Frame (Channel vs I-Beam vs Tube)

The frame is the trailer’s structural skeleton. Channel frames use open C-shaped steel, I-beam frames use tall flanged beams for efficient strength, and tube frames use closed rectangular sections that resist twisting. No profile is automatically best: section size, steel or aluminum grade, crossmember spacing, welds, coatings, drainage, and the trailer’s certified ratings all matter.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating)

Also called: gross axle weight rating

GAWR, or Gross Axle Weight Rating, is the maximum load the manufacturer assigns to an axle system. A trailer with two 7,000-pound axles does not automatically have a 14,000-pound payload; GVWR, empty weight, tires, wheels, suspension, brakes, frame, and tongue load also matter. Use the trailer certification label and never exceed any listed component rating.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating)

Also called: gross combined weight rating

GCWR, or Gross Combined Weight Rating, is the maximum loaded weight allowed by the tow-vehicle manufacturer for the tow vehicle and trailer together. Compare it with actual scale weights as well as the vehicle’s GVWR, axle ratings, hitch rating, and trailer ratings. Commercial driver-license rules use separate federal and state definitions; for interstate Class A CDL analysis, the 26,001-pound combination threshold and a towed unit over 10,000 pounds are both relevant.

Gooseneck Trailer

A gooseneck trailer couples to a ball mounted in the bed of a pickup, directly over or just ahead of the rear axle, via an arched neck that gives the style its name. Putting the hitch weight on the truck's axle instead of behind it is what lets goosenecks carry far more than bumper pulls, 14,000 to 40,000 lb GVWR, while towing more stably and turning tighter. The cost is a truck-bed hitch installation and losing some bed space.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

Also called: gross vehicle weight rating

GVWR, or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, is the maximum total loaded trailer weight assigned by the manufacturer. It includes the empty trailer, cargo, options, tools, fluids, and anything else carried on it. GVWR is not payload: payload begins with GVWR minus the trailer’s actual empty weight and can be reduced by axle, tire, wheel, hitch, frame, or tow-vehicle limits.

Hoist (Dump Trailer)

The hoist is the hydraulic mechanism that lifts a dump trailer's bed, and its design is one of the biggest quality differences between dump trailers. The two dominant designs are the scissor hoist (a folding X-frame under the bed's center, the heavy-duty standard) and the telescopic cylinder (a multi-stage ram at the front of the bed, taller dump angle). Some entry-level trailers use twin straight cylinders instead, which lift well only until a load shifts rearward.

Horse & Stock Trailer

A stock trailer is ventilated and configured to transport livestock, often with interior gates to divide the load. Horse-trailer configurations may add stalls, dividers, mats, padding, tack storage, and front or side access. Animal type, number and size, loading behavior, ventilation, floor condition, tow stability, and the trailer manufacturer’s capacity guidance should drive the layout choice.

Hotshot Trailer

A hotshot trailer is a long flatbed, usually a gooseneck, used with a pickup or medium-duty truck for time-sensitive freight. Common features include a low deck, ramps or a hydraulic dovetail, chain securement points, and tandem dual axles. Commercial registration, operating authority, hours-of-service, insurance, and CDL requirements depend on the vehicle ratings, actual operation, cargo, route, and jurisdiction.

I-Beam Frame

An I-beam frame uses beams with an I-shaped cross-section for main rails or structural members. The profile can provide efficient bending strength for its weight, which is why it appears on many heavy gooseneck, deckover, and flatbed designs. Beam depth, flange and web thickness, material grade, crossmembers, reinforcement, welds, and the complete certified trailer design determine capacity.

Interior Height

Interior height is the usable clearance inside an enclosed cargo trailer, floor to ceiling. Standard builds run about 6'3"–6'6"; "extra height" options add 6–12", which matters if you'll walk around inside, rack tall shelving, or haul a UTV with a cage. Spec sheets may list interior height at the center peak, so check wall height too on rounded-roof models.

Jack (Tongue Jack)

The tongue jack is the crank- or power-operated leg at the front of a trailer that raises and lowers the coupler onto the hitch ball and supports the tongue when unhitched. Styles include topwind and sidewind manual jacks, drop-leg jacks, hydraulic jacks on big dumps, and dual 12,000 lb jacks on heavy goosenecks. Its rating must exceed the trailer's loaded tongue weight .

Knife-Edge Tail

A knife-edge tail (or knife-edge approach) is a rear deck edge tapered down to a thin profile so the transition from ramp to deck is nearly seamless. On tilt and low-profile equipment trailers it minimizes the breakover point that can high-center long, low machines like scissor lifts and stance cars.

Landscape Trailer

A landscape trailer is an open utility trailer configured for lawn and landscape work. Common features include a rear ramp gate, side access, mesh or solid sides, trimmer racks, tool storage, and tie-down points for mowers and equipment. Choose dimensions, payload, gate rating, axle configuration, and securement around the actual machines and materials the crew carries.

Load Range (Tire)

Load range is a tire strength category tied to a tire’s load-and-inflation table; common trailer-tire examples include C, D, and E. It replaces the older literal ply-count system, so “10-ply rated” does not mean ten physical plies. Choose tires that meet the trailer and load requirements, and inflate them cold to the trailer or tire manufacturer’s specified pressure rather than assuming the sidewall maximum is correct for every setup.

Lowboy Trailer

A lowboy is a heavy equipment trailer whose deck drops down between the gooseneck and the axles, riding close to the ground so tall machines stay under height limits and load at a shallow angle. In the towable market, lowboy-style goosenecks with hydraulically detachable or tilting necks let excavators and lifts drive straight on from ground level.

A monorail trailer is an oilfield-style trailer built around a single massive center I-beam rather than a two-rail frame, with the load carried on bolsters straddling the beam. The design excels at long, concentrated loads, drill pipe, casing, and downhole tools, and side-loading by forklift or crane.

Net Payload

Also called: net capacity

Net payload is another name for payload capacity: the weight available for cargo after subtracting the trailer’s actual empty weight from GVWR. Published payload is a starting point because installed options and carried equipment change empty weight, and axle, tire, wheel, hitch, frame, and tow-vehicle ratings may impose a lower practical limit.

Oilfield trailers are a family of severe-duty trailers built for energy-sector work: monorail pipe trailers, lowboy-style equipment haulers, and heavy flatbeds with rolling tailboards and winch packages for skidded loads. Expect triple axles, oscillating suspensions, and pintle or gooseneck coupling rated well beyond standard equipment-trailer specs.

Payload Capacity

Payload capacity is the weight available for cargo. A starting calculation is trailer GVWR minus the trailer’s actual empty weight, but options, tools, fluids, and accessories all consume payload. The safe limit is whichever applicable rating is lowest, including GVWR, GAWR, tires, wheels, frame, coupler, hitch, and tow-vehicle limits.

Pintle Hitch

A pintle hitch couples a hook-and-latch on the truck (the pintle) to a steel ring on the trailer (the lunette), instead of a ball and coupler. The connection allows far more vertical articulation and higher weight ratings than a ball, which is why it's the standard for military, construction, and agricultural towing over rough ground. The trade-off is play in the connection, pintle rigs ride noticeably clunkier on pavement.

Pipe-Top Rail

A pipe-top rail is a utility-trailer side rail capped or constructed with round steel pipe rather than only angle iron. It provides a continuous upper rail and a rounded contact surface for some tie-down uses. Pipe diameter and wall thickness, upright spacing, welds, anchor ratings, and the trailer’s overall frame design determine strength; the rail should not be treated as an unlimited tie-down point.

Pipehauler Trailer

A pipehauler is a flatbed or bolster-style trailer configured for long tubular loads such as pipe, casing, or fencing material. Stakes, bolsters, bunks, and securement points help control rolling and spreading during loading and transport. Trailer configuration, load distribution, rated capacity, overhang, securement, permits, and route rules must match the specific material and operation.

Radial vs Bias-Ply Tires

Radial trailer tires (marked "R", as in ST235/80R16) have cord plies running across the tread, giving cooler running, longer wear, and better highway manners; bias-ply tires (marked "D") have diagonal plies, tougher sidewalls, and lower cost. For trailers that see regular highway miles, radials are the modern default; bias-ply persists on low-speed farm and yard trailers.

Ramp Door

A ramp door is an enclosed cargo trailer's rear door that folds down on a spring-assist hinge to become a loading ramp. It's the must-have option for anything on wheels, mowers, motorcycles, golf carts, race cars, and typically carries a 1,500–3,000 lb rating. Compare with barn doors , which are lighter and open in tight spaces but can't be driven over.

Ramps (Slide-In, Stand-Up, Fold-Flat)

Equipment and car trailers carry their loading ramps in one of three ways: slide-in ramps stow in a channel under the deck (light, but lighter-rated); stand-up ramps pin upright at the rear and fold down (fast, heavy-rated, act as a load stop when up); fold-flat / lay-over ramps fold onto the dovetail. Ramp rating matters as much as trailer rating, a 10,000 lb machine needs ramps rated for it, per side pair.

Roll-Off Trailer & Roll-Off Dumpster

A roll-off trailer carries removable dumpsters or containers that are loaded and unloaded with a hydraulic hoist and winch or cable system. One trailer can rotate among multiple bins for roofing, demolition, landscaping, or property cleanup. Match each container and load to the trailer’s rated capacity, hoist geometry, tow vehicle, securement system, and applicable licensing and operating rules.

Rub Rail

A rub rail is a steel rail running along the outside edge of a flatbed or equipment trailer's deck, standing slightly off the frame so straps and chains can hook behind it at any point. Paired with stake pockets , it's the securement backbone of an open trailer, and it takes the scrapes (the "rubs") that would otherwise chew up the frame.

Scissor Hoist (Scissor Lift)

Also called: scissor lift

A scissor hoist raises a dump body through crossing steel arms driven by a hydraulic cylinder. The linkage provides stable support and useful leverage through much of the lift, making it common on medium-duty dump trailers. Hoist rating, pivot geometry, cylinder size, mounting, dump angle, and load placement determine performance; the word “scissor” alone does not establish lifting capacity.

Slipper Spring Suspension

Slipper spring suspension is a leaf-spring design in which one end of each spring slides in a frame hanger instead of using a rear shackle. It has fewer shackle components than a double-eye arrangement and is used on many heavier trailer applications. Spring capacity, axle spacing, equalizer design, hanger and frame construction, ride characteristics, serviceability, and the complete suspension rating matter.

Spread Axle

A spread-axle trailer places its axles farther apart than a conventional close tandem. The longer wheelbase can improve load distribution and straight-line stability, while increasing tire scrub and turning space. Any bridge-law benefit applies only in the relevant commercial and jurisdictional context; GVWR, GAWR, tire ratings, and actual axle weights still control.

Stake Pockets

Stake pockets are open steel sleeves spaced along the edge of a flatbed or utility trailer frame. They do double duty: drop in wood or steel stakes to build removable sides, or hook straps, chains, and winch hardware through them for tie-down. Paired with a rub rail , they define where you can anchor a load on an open deck.

Straight Deck

A straight deck trailer has a flat, full-length deck with no dovetail, maximum usable flat space, preferred when hauling pallets, hay, or tall equipment where a sloped tail wastes deck. Loading wheeled machines means a steeper ramp angle, so straight decks pair with longer ramps or a tilt design.

Surge Brakes

Surge brakes are hydraulic trailer brakes activated mechanically: when the tow vehicle slows, the trailer pushes forward against a sliding coupler that compresses a master cylinder and applies the brakes, no wiring or in-cab controller needed. They're common on boat and rental trailers because any vehicle can tow them, but they can't be applied manually and complicate backing uphill, so work trailers use electric brakes instead.

Tandem Axle

A tandem-axle trailer has two axles positioned near one another, often connected by an equalized leaf-spring suspension. Compared with a similar single-axle design, tandem axles can provide greater rated capacity and different ride and tracking characteristics, while adding tires, brakes, maintenance, turning scrub, and empty weight. The trailer’s GVWR and component ratings, not axle count alone, set capacity.

Tarp Kit

A tarp kit covers a dump-trailer load with mesh or solid fabric using a manual crank or electric motor. It helps contain loose material and reduces debris loss in transit, but it does not replace correct loading, rated capacity, tailgate latching, or other cargo securement. Covering and securement requirements vary by load and jurisdiction.

Telescopic Hoist

A telescopic hoist uses a multi-stage hydraulic cylinder that extends directly to raise the dump body. It can provide a steep dump angle with fewer linkage parts than a scissor design and is common on heavier dump trailers. Cylinder rating, mounting position, hydraulic pressure, body geometry, and load placement determine real lifting performance.

Tilt Trailer

A tilt trailer loads equipment with no ramps at all: the deck pivots on a hinge (gravity tilt) or hydraulic cylinder, touching its tail to the ground so machines drive straight up a continuous, shallow slope. That makes tilts the go-to for low-clearance loads, scissor lifts, forklifts, lowered cars, that would high-center on ramps. Full-tilt decks pivot entirely; split-deck models keep a stationary front section for a toolbox or second machine.

Tongue Weight

Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer's coupler puts on the hitch, the single biggest factor in whether a trailer tows straight or sways. The rule of thumb: load a bumper pull so 10–15% of its total weight is on the tongue, and a gooseneck so 15–25% is on the ball. Too little tongue weight causes dangerous sway at speed; too much overloads the truck's rear axle. Adjust it by moving cargo forward or back over the axles.

Torsion Axle

A torsion axle uses rubber cords inside the axle tube to provide spring action independently at each wheel instead of external leaf springs. It can support a lower deck and has no leaf-spring shackles or equalizers, but alignment, load sharing, repair options, and ride characteristics differ from a leaf-spring suspension. Compare the complete axle and suspension rating for the trailer’s intended terrain and load.

Tube Frame

A tube frame uses closed rectangular or square structural sections for the main rails or crossmembers. The closed shape resists twisting and creates clean mounting surfaces, which is useful on enclosed, utility, and aluminum trailers. Material thickness, section size, welds, coatings, drainage, and certified ratings matter because a closed tube is not automatically moisture-proof or stronger than every channel or I-beam design.

Utility Trailer

A utility trailer is an open general-purpose trailer, commonly built with low side rails and a rear ramp gate. It can carry lawn equipment, ATVs, furniture, building materials, and other loads that fit its dimensions and ratings. Compare usable deck size, payload, frame and floor construction, gate rating, axle configuration, brakes, tires, and securement points for the intended work.

V-Nose

A V-nose is an enclosed trailer front that tapers forward instead of using a flat vertical wall. The shape can add interior floor area near the tongue and changes cabinet, shelving, and aerodynamic behavior. The VIN sticker, often called the certification label, identifies the trailer and lists manufacturer-assigned information such as VIN, GVWR, GAWR, tire size, rim size, and cold tire pressure. It is the primary reference for the trailer’s certified ratings. If it is missing or unreadable, contact the manufacturer or the appropriate motor-vehicle agency before relying on replacement paperwork or labels.

Weight Distribution Hitch

A weight distribution hitch uses spring bars to lever part of a bumper pull trailer's tongue weight off the truck's rear axle and onto its front axle and the trailer's axles. The result: level ride height, restored steering feel, and full use of many trucks' tow ratings (owner's manuals often require one above ~5,000–8,000 lb). Many include integrated sway control. Not used with goosenecks, which put weight over the axle by design.

Winch

A trailer winch is a powered or hand-cranked drum that pulls a vehicle or piece of equipment with wire rope or synthetic line. Proper selection depends on the rolling load, slope, friction, line layers, rigging, duty cycle, mounting structure, and manufacturer rating, not vehicle weight alone. Use rated recovery points and hardware, keep people clear of the line, and follow the winch and trailer instructions.

Wood Decking (Treated Pine, Blackwood)

Wood decking is common on utility, equipment, and flatbed trailers because it is replaceable, provides useful traction, and is easier on cargo than bare steel. Treated pine is the standard economical choice; branded laminated products such as Blackwood add a durable rubber wear surface. Service life depends on wood grade, treatment, drainage, storage, loading, and maintenance.
